On December 17, 2023, someone called the ambulance on a 55 year old homeless man that needed HELP, that homeless person is my brother and his name is Anthony. Immediately, he was admitted to ICU in Knoxville, Tennessee and after numerous tests and weeks went by he was diagnosed with Congestive Heart Failure, Cirrhosis of the Liver, Kidney damage, Lung issues and on top of that he was born with Sickle Cell. (See picture of Anthony straight off the street to ICU)
On January 9, 2024, Anthony, now age 56 was pending discharge in less than 24 hours with no available housing or shelter that would accept him based on his prior mental (bipolar and schizophrenia) and physical behavior. During this timeframe, I was in disbelief that the hospital couldn’t find an agency that would “house” him based on his conditions, but wanted me to find a place ASAP. SAY WHAT? Despite being long distance, I did what the Lord told me do – I prayed and then he used my strategic skills learned in the military to open up the door to a shelter where he didn’t have to leave during the day. (Look at God) (See center picture of Anthony getting food at shelter)
Anthony’s stay at the shelter was limited due to breathing and Ascites (fluid retention in abdomen) that sent him back to the ICU and on a ventilator for the first time. Shortly after he was taken off the ventilator I was summoned to come home to talk to the doctor with my other siblings. The doctor stated that Anthony’s heart and liver had worsened and from a medical standpoint my brother was given 6 months to live. The doctor then looked at me and stated Mrs. Robinson – I think you should seriously consider changing his emergency medical status from “Full Code to Do Not Resuscitate (DNR)”. I looked at my youngest sister, then I looked at Anthony (who was watching me) and he immediately stated – “Lisa- I WANT TO LIVE” – again he stated (Lisa-I have my family now and I want to LIVE). I looked at the doctor who appeared to be stunned by Anthony’s statement and said keep the Full Code! **Prior to my departure, Anthony accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and personal Savior on February 10, 2024 at 4pm EST and was approved in March 2024 to reside in a nursing facility (Look at God). (See picture of my visit with now – Brother Anthony – Saved by God’s Grace and Mercy)!
4. (See picture of Anthony outside the nursing home getting some sunshine with my sister Faye). Despite all the good news, his health conditions remained serious and due to the limitations of the nursing home Anthony returned back to the hospital in March 2024 and then a return to the ICU April – May 2024. During this extensive timeframe (longest so far) Anthony became frustrated with me because he felt I didn’t understand his pain (blood draws, several paracentesis, limited pain meds, etc); but I just “rocked steady” and trusted God. Then I got the call for (approval) to put him back on the ventilator (round 2) due to severe oxygen issues. I approved and praised God for his limited time on the ventilator (See picture of Anthony on Vent)
5. Around the end of May 2024, his housing issue became a bigger problem because despite still having the same terminal illnesses the state deemed him unqualified because he could walk a longer distance than before (REALLY)…. Nevertheless, after much prayer, then more prayer and encouragement from the Saints and Friends worldwide…. God opened up another door and Anthony was approved to return to the Nursing Home.
6. In June 2024, Anthony with his oxygen tank attended Children of God Ministries, COGIC with my sister and her spouse (See picture of Nathan and Anthony preparing to enter the church building) for the first time in over 20+ years. Then he was treated to a Father’s Day meal at Longhorn Steakhouse where he was full of smiles – and catch this (he was adamant on taking some steak and dessert home with him). YES – I said HOME! ****(Oh God… I am just so thankful) for what you are doing in our lives!
*As of this post, Brother Anthony who was once lost, homeless (no dignity) and didn’t feel any empathy or compassion from his family now is fighting to LIVE and feels LOVED by his siblings. (Not a perfect family… But One That Was Willing to “Turn Compassion Into Action” for our Bloodline)
*Stay tuned for more on my journey with my brother – Mr. Anthony Bowen …. From Homeless (Invisible) to Visible!
*Keep him in your prayers – September has been interesting!!
